Boy was it a beautiful day in New York City!!! This is a picture I took this morning from the roof of our new apartment building. Man, what a day!

The hair that came out by rubbing my head last night

We are currently moving into our new apartment. My parents have been with the movers all day, but I was only there for about an hour this morning. Basically enough time to say hello, take that picture and finish shaving off some of the stray hairs remaining on my head. Last night I took a shower and the hair really started coming out. I would stand there and rub the side of my head for a second and then look at my hand and it would not be visible beneath the amounts of hair covering it up! It was a mess.

After I was done showering there were basically just some stringy hairs left, so we took my beard trimmer to them. Unfortunately it ran out of batteries before we could finish, so I spent the night looking like a dog with a bad case of ringworm. My charger was up at the new apartment, so we had to finish up the trim this morning when I went over there. Luckily I had a beanie that covered up the patchiness of my hair when I went out in public. It was pretty funky looking to say the least! And now, since I know you are all dieing to see, here is my baldness in all its glory!

I met up with some friends from advertising school this afternoon and we went to a place called Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown. My parents and I were told about this place by several Chinese people since we have been in the city, and it definitely lived up to the hype! Their specialty is pork soup dumplings, which I fell in love with when my parents lived in Shanghai. I find myself craving these things on a regular basis, so it was great to finally find somewhere that served them! We had to wait outside in the cold for over an hour, but it was worth it!

One final thing that I found really funny today was that when I woke up this morning with my freshly bald head, the first thing I see in my email is a message from Groupon, which is a coupon service that emails you with new offers each day. Below is a screenshot of today’s offering:

Hey, Rob. That picture you took of the City is postcard quality! What a gorgeous shot – I hope you took more of those. I think it’s terrific that in a very challenging situation, you are finding ways to create beautiful works of art with your photography. It reminds me of something I read recently on a bookmarker of all things, and which I just happen to have near me. It says:

Believe in what makes you feel good
    and what makes you happy.
Believe in the dreams you’ve always wanted to come true,
and give them every chance to.
If you are willing to take the opportunities you are given
and utilize the abilities you have,
you will constantly fill your life with special moments
    and unforgettable times.
No one knows the mysteries of life
    or its ultimate meaning,
but for those who are willing to believe in their dreams and in themselves,
life is a precious gift in which anything is possible.

Your new bald look is actually hip! Especially with the beard.

    • Rob says:

Haha, thanks Peggy! The baldness with the beard has actually grown on me, but unfortunately I think it’s just a matter of time till I go the route of the naked mole rat. Once it comes back though, maybe I should rock the beard with the bic’d head for a little bit! Haha. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Oh, Rob!! I cannot tell you how I look forward every day to reading about your adventures! It is just amazing how you are inspire me. I am so happy you all are going to have an real home for you to go to after treatments in the big city.

We just got back from a week at the beach with my family. We were in Garden City, SC not too far from your NC beach home. There was a full moon early in the week and it was so gorgeous at night. It was warm all week (high 70’s) until the rain came on Fri and delivered a cold front. On Thanksgiving morning during the parade I was in a heated Go Fish game with my four year old niece. She loved seeing the balloons. I will have to show her the pictures in your blog!

We went to church today and had a real good crowd especially considering it is a travel day from Thanksgiving. Chris sat with Joan and Fanester (I was in the choir).

I too love all the architecture in NYC (or any city for that matter). I cannot wait to see your pictures.

Know that you are prayed for by so many. You are such a brave soldier!!

Thanks Mrs. Hoover! I appreciate you taking a minute to reach out. The beach sounds so wonderful. After this cold New York winter I think I might need to thaw out at Wrightsville for a week or so myself! Haha
I hope yall had a great Thanksgiving and that you won that Go Fish game! Haha

    Hey Rob
The ‘do’ looks good on you–just like Patrick Stewart–only younger and cuter!
Please give your mama a big hug for me!

    Hey Rob,
I told your mom and I’ll tell you–I think you look great. Very sexy and cool. I’m sure you’ll respond as my boys would, “well, you’re old and a mom” , but still for what it’s worth….. I think you look very handsome!
